Recycling Program

As of Jan 1, 2018, Waste Management has placed a ban on the use of plastic bags for collection of recycling for commercial customers including schools, hospitals, and other businesses. This also bans the recycling of shredded paper in Waste Management recycling containers. Plastic bags wrap around sorting equipment at the sorting facilities, which then forces shut-downs of equipment in order to remove all of the plastic bags. This ban will eventually also impact residential collections for Waste Management customers; however, at this time, it has not been implemented. It's highly recommended that residents begin to place their recycling lose in curbside bins for collection in order to prepare.

For commercial customers of Waste Management, in order to avoid recycling being considered trash, and potential surcharges, make sure to place all recyclable materials in recycling containers without bags.”

Here is the article, it’s from last year, and from Florida, but, it does give a good overview as to why plastic bags are a problem. https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/region-hillsborough/recycling-plastic-grocery-bags-causing-big-problems-at-recycling-centers
